DOWNTOWN SPEZIAL [DEU-ENG]
The term downtown stands for the geographical and commercial centre of a US city. These inner-city districts have undergone radical change as a result of the economic developments of recent decades, which in the long term has also altered the appearance of the urban residential areas. Horst Hamann has now lived in the USA for 20 years, and has explored the country thoroughly in the course of many journeys. Pictures of small businesses which only survive with difficulty or have been given up completely and abandoned, whole city districts which are increasingly falling into ruin and testify to the yawning gap between impoverished and affluent areas, and the creation of so-called ghost towns convey an ambivalent, sometimes melancholic overall view of the New World, as shown by pictures taken in such places as Montana, South Dakota or West Virginia. Hamann has always been fascinated by the almost poetic character of such places full of history and symbolism, which is why he has continued to work on these subjects photographically: I have always been more interested in a flaking house wall than a freshly painted façade without any potential story behind it.
